St. Thomas University, New Brunswick, will grant honorary degrees to three distinguished Canadians, Natalie MacMaster, Linden MacIntyre and John J. Pungente at its 2003 Convocation ceremony on May 12, 2003. Natalie MacMaster is a world renowned musician who has won eleven East Coast Music Awards, including 2002 Entertainer of the Year. She has been named Fiddle Player of the Year for the past five consecutive years by the Canadian Country Music Awards and has won two Juno Awards. She has shared the live performance stage with acts ranging from Alison Krauss to Luciano Pavarotti and dozens of world-class symphony orchestras. Two of her CD's have been on Billboard's Top 20 Selling World Music charts and four of her previous five CD releases have been certified "gold" (50 000 +) in Canada. Linden MacIntyre, a native of Cape Breton, has been a journalist for 39 years. John J. Pungente, SJ, has worked in media education for more than 35 years. March 9, 2002 In association with the Children's Miracle Network, Natalie will be playing the national anthems at the Ottawa Senators hockey game on Saturday night, March 23rd at the Corel Centre in Ottawa, Ontario. ........................................................................................................................................ February 21, 2002 Natalie is flying to Monterey, California today to attend the TED conference this weekend as both a delegate and a presenter. She will be performing a piece of music composed by Thomas Dolby (remember 'She Blinded Me With Science' from the 80's?). The piece of music he wrote was actually inspired by Natalie's performance at the TED conference last year. They will perform the piece of music together on Saturday, February 23rd. Other musicians attending the conference this year include Herbie Hancock. On Sunday she flies to San Francisco and on to Berkeley where she will begin preproduction on her next studio album with her producer, Darol Anger. This album is scheduled for release some time in 2003 at this point. In March, she starts touring again in the US and In May, she will travel to Nashville to record. Her upcoming double-CD "Natalie MacMaster Live", which will include one disc recorded live at a square dance in Glencoe Mills with Joel Chaisson and Dave MacIsaac and the second disc recorded live at a concert in Mississauga, Ontario at the Living Arts Centre. This double CD is scheduled for release in either March or April this year. No firm release date has been set yet. 26, 2001 Cape Breton’s daughter and Queen of the Fiddle, Natalie MacMaster stars in her first hour-long special, NATALIE MACMASTER - MY ROOTS ARE SHOWING, now in production for CBC Television and scheduled to air on the network in the coming season. MacMaster will take viewers on a trek to discover the roots of her music in Cape Breton and, with her new band, performs some new tunes, some hits and some classics, all but guaranteed to thrill her fans. Beloved in her native East Coast and by fiddle enthusiasts everywhere, she has also captured more than her share of music industry awards. Her electric performance on The 1999 Juno Awards, regarded as the highlight of the show, won her a Gemini Award. The vivacious MacMaster will be joined by special guest stars Jann Arden and Alison Krauss at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre on July 31st for a live concert mounted just for the special. Segments already completed shooting include a traditional Cape Breton jam session with MacMaster and four of her favourite fiddlers who get it on in a down home kitchen. Viewers will also get to see MacMaster perform at an All Ages dance in Glencoe Mills, a small isolated hall where she performed as a child. 3, 2001 In recent weeks both Natalie MacMaster's "In My Hands" (recently achieving Gold status in Canada) and "My Roots Are Showing" CD's have been charting in the Billboard magazine's Top 20 selling World Music recordings chart. In the meantime, Natalie left for a five-week US tour on April 17. She's island-hopping in Hawaii this week, playing 3 shows in in four days, then meets back up with her tour bus to travel up the coast of California for 4 shows, including UCLA on Saturday. She's already played to several sold out audiences throughout New England, Staten Island and Texas. The tour wraps up in New Jersey on May 24. 16, 2001 Natalie MacMaster will be appearing with The Chieftains on The Tonight Show this Thursday evening, January 18 (please check your local listings for air time. The show airs on NBC in the US and Canada). Natalie flew to Denver, Colorado yesterday to join The Chieftains on their US tour. She and the band will be flying to Los Angeles on Wednesday evening to tape the show. The show will feature Joan Osborne, who is also touring with The Chieftains for the first leg of their tour. Also scheduled to appear the same night is Madonna’s husband, Guy Ritchie. Natalie will be in Charlottetown, PEI for the East Coast Music Awards on February 11th, where she is nominated for four awards (please call 1-900-870-ECMA to vote for Natalie for the "Entertainer of the Year" award"). She will travel back to Los Angeles later that month to attend the Grammy Awards Show. Natalie received her first Grammy nomination earlier this month for "My Roots Are Showing" (released April 2000 in the USA). Winners will be announced at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards telecast on February 21, 2001. The three-hour show will originate from Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA and be broadcast on CBS-TV at 8:00pm. (EST/PST).
